Expedition FAQ's

What is the Sophomore Expedition?
The expedition is a five-day backpacking trip similar to a NOLS or Outward Bound course. This is an amazing opportunity for our students to learn and lead outside the traditional classroom. Students have said, “it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done – I’m so proud!” Teachers come back year after year and call it, “the best thing I do all year.”

Sophomores take part in the expedition instead of their final exams spring term.

Why do we do the Expedition?
The focus of the sophomore year is cooperative learning. Many learning styles and components of cooperative learning are better addressed outside the traditional classroom. The expedition teaches important elements of working together in a group such as conflict resolution, decision making and the connection of freedom to responsibility.

What do end of the year classes look like for Sophomores?
Teachers won't load sophomores down with work the last week of school. They will give last tests or papers (not final exams) on the long block of the week before finals. If a student needs a final exam grade to substantially improve their final grade they may elect to take the exam during the week before the expedition.

How many adults are with each group?
One or two teachers and a professional wilderness instructor accompany each group to make sure the trip is safe, fun and successful. Frequently an upper class student leader will also accompany the group.

Where will my child be hiking & sleeping?
The groups hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. All groups will camp in tents and in three sided wooden shelters.

What does my child need to bring?
Stay tuned - a complete gear list is coming home by mail and with your child. We'll also post it here.

Is there anything my child doesn’t need to bring?
We will provide all group camping gear like tents, cooking equipment, maps and compasses. Please don’t bring a cell phone, ipod or other electronic device.
