Let's all look on the dark side, shall we?

As I've been reporting the weather has been pretty good this year. Sure there was some rain on course start and yesterday was pretty windy. Of course there is snow in the mountains on the trails still. But really that's all pretty much expected.

I was talking with some upper class students and alums of the SophX and they were trying as hard as they could to look on the dark side of the good weather. "I'll bet the bugs will be terrible," one student quipped hopefully. "It'll be cold," said another student with confidence. It seems that there is a bit of pride in students at having been through tough conditions and completing the expedition successfully.

Even one of the faculty was getting into the game. He seemed genuinely concerned for the success of the program when he worried, "I don't think the weather is bad enough for a bonding experience to take place." Nice.

Actually I think they're all wrong, I'll bet the bugs won't be that bad and the cold won't be unusual. What will be unusual this year is the stream crossings. With the late season snow and rain at course start, groups will have to be quite careful crossing swollen brooks and streams. I'll bet dry warm socks will be at hot commodity by Thursday morning!
